Rickets is a condition that affects skeletal growth during childhood, primarily caused by a deficiency in vitamin D. A baby with rickets experiences emotional deprivation, not necessarily because their parents neglect them but because they're prevented from growing normally, believing that continued dependency will earn more care.
Parents of babies with rickets should communicate with them as they would with adults. Babies intuitively absorb language. It's important to convey that eventually, they'll need to become autonomous. Holding onto the belief that dependence on others will earn more love will lead to disappointment. Staying forever a small child is not the solution. They must accept that parents, or caregivers, provide care to the best of their abilities and within the child's limits and capacities.
If I suffer from rickets, the physical malnutrition reflects my emotional and affective emptiness or lack of tenderness and love. I might feel alone, misunderstood, and vulnerable. This condition often affects me during childhood. I must remind myself that I'm always protected, surrounded by universal love. I need to accept this love and allow it to nourish me, dispelling the disease that will no longer be needed when I understand that I must love myself before I can love others.
I will have understood that I must first give love to myself before I can give it to others.
